Your vacation is supposed to be a soothing escape from the stresses of everyday life, but a problem at home, such as inclement weather or water damage, can prevent you from fully enjoying your trip. The best way to make your retreat stress-free is to prepare your home beforehand for any hazards that could affect your property.
Find out how your home could be damaged while on vacation and what you can do to prevent any accidents.
What Could Happen While You’re Away?
Many homeowners leave their homes for vacation despite the fact that there is a leak developing in the house. This seemingly minor leak can cause extensive water damage, and the worst part is that you'd be unaware of it because you'd be out of town!
This is why it’s best to take precautions and take care of any hazards before leaving to enjoy your well-deserved vacation.
Shut off your water. There is usually no reason to keep your water running while you’re away for vacation, so turning it off can keep water damage from occurring. Shutting off your main water valve can keep pipes from bursting or leaking and keep you from returning to a home doused in the water!
Check the weather before leaving. Severe weather doesn’t wait for you to get back from your vacation! Conditions like heavy rain, strong winds and floods can sweep through while you’re away and ruin your unprepared property. Before leaving for your vacation, double-check your local weather forecasts to ensure no adverse weather is expected to strike your community.
Clear your gutters and drains. Cleaning your gutters and downspouts is a good habit to have even when you don’t plan on going out of town. Clear your gutters of leaves and any other outdoor debris to ensure water can flow properly if it were to rain while you’re gone.
Prevent accidental flames. The last thing you’d want to happen while you are relaxing out of town is an unexpected fire breaking out at home! Ensure smoke alarms are in good working order before leaving by checking that the batteries are still good. And unplugging as many electronics you don’t plan on using can not only prevent flames from breaking out but also save you some money on your electric bill.
